Upcoming regulatory changes

Effective November 1, 2026, the EU requires three product identifiers for each item in direct-to-consumer parcels valued under €150. Parcels missing this information may be rejected at customs and incur return-to-origin fees.

When you buy labels through Shopify Shipping or Managed Markets, Shopify adds these identifiers to your customs documents using your product data. Labels for EU-bound orders cannot be purchased for items missing required identifiers.

What you need to do

Add product identification information in Shopify in product barcodes. Learn more about adding barcodes to products.
* Merchant Product Identifier (M-PID): No action needed. Your product variant in Shopify already covers this.
* Standardized Product Identifier (S-PID): Add a barcode with type GTIN, EAN, UPC, or ISBN. If your product doesn't have one, declare that none exists on the product details page.
* Non-Standardized Manufacturer Product Identifier (NS-PID): Add the manufacturer's model number, part number, or style code as a barcode with type NS-PID. You can also use your own product code or SKU. If you've added a standardized identifier but no NS-PID, Shopify uses the standardized identifier as the NS-PID.

What's new

• Identifiers on EU customs documents. Shopify includes the required identifiers on labels and customs documents for parcels shipping into the EU, for both Managed Markets & Shopify Shipping.
• Declare when no standardized identifier exists. Mark products that don't have a standardized identifier from the product details page.
• Automatic exemptions. Shopify uses HS codes to identify exempt products and applies the exemption for you.
• Bulk updates. Add barcodes and declarations to many products at once in the bulk editor.
