zooplus marketplace 上线西班牙站,首批 1 万款商品
zooplus marketplace launches in Spain with 10,000 products
The zooplus marketplace is now live in Spain, adding 10,000 products to the online pet retailer’s local range. Spain is the third European country to get the marketplace, after launches in Germany and France. More markets are set to follow in 2027.
Why zooplus is building a marketplace
In an interview with GlobalPETS, CEO Lionel Desclée said the model lets the retailer grow its range faster where it matters most. “Marketplace is one way to expand our assortment more quickly in the categories that our customers care most about,” he said.
It also opens up categories that would otherwise need heavy investment in logistics. Desclée’s example: selling fresh and frozen pet food “without having fresh and frozen logistics.”
zooplus marketplace growth in Germany and France
Desclée described the growth as “very nice”. Since the zooplus marketplace launched in Germany in July 2026, the number of products has tripled to more than 30,000. The seller base has more than doubled to over 100 partners.
The company’s Chief Merchandising Officer, Pierre-Yves Delforge, shared further figures on his LinkedIn:
- Across its marketplaces, the number of categories sold has grown close to fourfold.
- Fresh and frozen food is the top-selling marketplace category in both Germany and France.
- Fresh and frozen now accounts for more than 10% of German marketplace sales.
A complement to direct brand partnerships
The zooplus marketplace is meant to complement, not replace, the retailer’s direct relationships with major suppliers. zooplus still works mainly through direct brand partnerships, which remain central to its commercial strategy.
“We are predominantly a house of brands,” Desclée said. “For us, long-term partnerships with brands are really at the core of the long-term strategy.”
A route to Europe for smaller and local brands
For smaller businesses, building the volume and infrastructure to sell across several countries is hard. The zooplus marketplace gives them a way to reach pet parents without setting up a centralised European operation.
“For smaller brands, it is easier to reach new customers through the marketplace because they perhaps don’t have the volume or the scale to operate centrally across Europe,” Desclée said.
The model also works as a testing ground. zooplus can see how customers respond to new brands, while local brands help it meet the needs of individual markets.
zooplus marketplace expansion plans for 2027
zooplus intends to bring the concept to more European countries in 2027, aiming to cover more of its largest current markets. “We will keep and actually accelerate the launch of our marketplace into more markets next year,” Desclée told GlobalPETS.
As the zooplus marketplace grows, the company plans to keep adding sellers and widening the range on offer. zooplus already serves 12 million customers across 30 countries, including Germany, France, Spain, Italy and the UK.
